“Ever since I got pregnant, my lower back won’t stop hurting!” “Now that I’m in my third trimester, I’m noticing a lot more neck pain and hip pain.” “I feel like my body is in pain all the time!” If this sounds like you or someone you know who’s pregnant, please read on to see how Chiropractic can help you!

While pregnancy is meant to be one of the most beautiful times for a mother-to-be, it can also be one of the most challenging times health-wise. It is estimated that almost 70% of pregnant women will suffer back pain during pregnancy (1). And that women who already suffered from lower back pain before pregnancy are twice as likely to develop back pain during pregnancy. The reason why this happens is because there are a lot of biomechanical shifts that happen to a woman’s spine throughout pregnancy. These shifts occur to help support their developing baby. One region of the spine that becomes most affected is the Sacroiliac (SI) joints, found in the region of the pelvis. As the baby grows, the mother’s body secretes a hormone called Relaxin which as it sounds, helps to relax muscles, joints and ligaments in the body. Relaxin is secreted the highest in the first trimester which is what causes a lot of expectant mothers to experience lower back pain and discomfort throughout pregnancy.

How Chiropractic can help

Chiropractic is a safe and natural solution to pain and the many musculoskeletal issues that pregnancy can bring.
As Chiropractors, we are trained to detect and gently correct misalignments/subluxations in the spine using various customized techniques. The Webster technique, in particular, is a specific Chiropractic Sacral Analysis and Diversified adjustment that helps decrease the effects of sacral subluxation/SI joint dysfunction that often occurs during pregnancy. It also helps to promote the normal physiological function of both the mother and baby throughout pregnancy and birth.

Seeing a Chiropractor during Pregnancy provides a myriad of benefits including:

Decreased lower back pain and neck pain.
• Better sleep
• Proper positioning of the baby in-utero (i.e. Breech presentation)
• Decreased labour time
