When Neha first came in, she could barely sit during her assessment.  As we went through her health history, she said that “I can’t remember the last time I had a good night’s rest and didn’t have pain while sitting or standing”. If you’re reading this while shifting uncomfortably in your seat, or if you’ve been googling “how to get rid of my back pain” because you aren’t sleeping well, I want you to know that you aren’t alone and you don’t have to live this way.

After more than a decade of helping patients in Etobicoke get on-going relief from back pain, I’ve learned that back pain and any pain for that matter has put many lives on hold. Maybe you are frustrated because you can’t pick up your grandchild anymore, or you’ve stopped going to your favorite yoga class, or you’re exhausted from pretending everything’s fine when it’s not. As a Chiropractor, I want you to know that I understand you, I hear you, and I encourage you not to lose hope.  There is a natural and effective solution to your back pain.

Why Back Pain Happens (And Why You’re Not Alone)

In my years of practice, I’ve never met someone who hasn’t experienced back pain at some point of their life. Understanding why your back is in pain is the first step toward healing.  People often think it is one incident that puts their “back out” but it’s rarely just one thing.

Your spine is the main highway of your body. When traffic flows smoothly, everything works the way that it should. However, when an accident (injury) happens, poor construction (posture) is present, or if there are too many cars (stressors), things start to back up. Here are the most common stressors I see in my practice:

The Desk Worker’s Dilemma: Bardia, an immigration officer, came to me after months of mid-back pain. Eight hours hunched over his computer had created what we call “hunch-back posture”: his head jutting forward, shoulders rounded, and his mid-back in an immense amount of pain.

The New Parent Shuffle: Jessica, a new mom, had back pain during pregnancy which worsened post-partum due to awkward nursing positions, carrying a car seat on one hip, and sleeping in whatever position her baby allowed. The physical demands of parenting are real, and your back often bears the brunt of the consequences.

The Weekend Warrior Syndrome: I’ve had patients over the years that after a weekend of repetitive lifting at home or doing something as benign as cleaning their bathroom, end up injuring their back.  One wrong lift, or turn often seems to be the trigger of their back pain.  However, these acute injuries often build up over years of minor strains that we’ve been ignoring.

The Stress Storage Unit: People don’t realize that emotional stress gets stored in your body. When life gets chaotic and overwhelming, your spine goes out of alignment and muscles tense up like they’re preparing for battle. Over time, this chronic tension leads to pain.

The Pregnancy Transformation: As your body prepares for your baby, your centre of gravity shifts, ligaments loosen, and your back works overtime to keep you upright.  As a result, pregnancy becomes a beautiful and challenging journey all at the same time.

How Chiropractic Care Helps Relieve Back Pain

Many people think that visiting a Chiropractor for back pain is only about getting their back “cracked”.  However, it is far from that.  Seeing a Chiropractor is about understanding your body as an interconnected system and addressing the root cause of your pain.

When your spine is aligned correctly, everything is able to function 100%.   Often times, after your first adjustment, the back pain you have been dealing with for months starts to subside.  Why does this happen?

1) Your Nervous System Gets a Reboot

Your spine houses your spinal cord.  This is the main communication highway between your brain and body. When vertebrae are misaligned (subluxations), it’s similar to having a kink in a garden hose. The messages get disrupted, leading to pain, muscle tension, and sometimes seemingly unrelated symptoms, such as digestive issues or headaches.

Through gentle adjustments, we restore proper alignment, allowing your nervous system to communicate freely again. Jennifer, a teacher who came to me with chronic lower back pain, was shocked when her decade-long struggle with constipation also resolved after a few weeks of care. Everything is connected!

2) Inflammation Disappears

When your spine is misaligned, surrounding tissues become inflamed as your body tries to protect the area. This inflammation presses on nerves, causing stiffness and perpetuating the pain cycle. Realigning the spine decreases inflammation naturally, eliminating the need for medication.

3) Your Body Remembers How to Move

Pain causes us to move differently. We compensate, we guard, and we develop abnormal walking patterns to avoid pain and discomfort. Over time, these compensations create other health problems. By restoring spinal alignment, Chiropractic helps restore proper movement patterns, which breaks the cycle of compensation, pain, and dysfunction.

Real Stories from Real Patients

One of the most common concerns that new patients have when seeing a Chiropractor is the fear of having their “back cracked”.   I want to take this moment to explain that those “cracking” noises that you may hear when getting your spine adjusted are simply gas bubbles being released from your joints.  Chiropractic adjustments are safe, effective, and delivered with precision to the subluxated areas of your spine.  This, in turn, allows for better movement of those joints and, subsequently, less pain due to decreased pressure on the surrounding nerves.

Denise’s Journey to Wellness

Denise, a 38-year-old yoga instructor (yes, even yoga teachers get back pain!), came to me concerned about traditional Chiropractic adjustments. She’d seen videos online and was convinced Chiropractic meant aggressive twisting and loud pops.

“I need help, but I am not sure if I can handle that cracking,” she told me during our first meeting.

“The adjustments are safe and gentle,” I assured her. “I will explain every step of the way what we are doing.”   The constant reassurance gave her peace of mind and the willingness to try it out.

Using manual adjustments with my hands, I adjusted Denise’ neck and mid back. A few weeks later, she was back to teaching yoga with no more neck tension, saying that she no longer experienced pain while teaching yoga poses!

The Desk Worker’s Transformation

Remember Neha, my patient who couldn’t sit or stand due to her back pain? She assumed her mid-back pain was due to sitting at her job all day long.  However, she was now at a point where his excuse wasn’t providing much comfort anymore.

We started with gentle adjustments to address her cervical (neck) and thoracic spine (mid-back) misalignments.  However, the real game-changer was combining this with spinal and postural education. I showed her how to set up her workspace ergonomically and exercises to do at home to improve her posture.

The best part? A few months later, Neha joyfully shared that she was able to sit and stand for long periods of time without back pain, something that’d have been impossible before.

The New Mom Who Got Her Life Back

Valerie’s story always touches my heart. We started seeing her during the second trimester of her pregnancy as she was experiencing severe pelvic and lower back pain.  The pain quickly resolved and did not affect her for the rest of her pregnancy.  After giving birth, the lower back pain came back, and she found it difficult to hold her newborn baby. The combination of the delivery and constant lifting had left her feeling sad and frustrated in not being able to care for her little one.

Using the Webster Technique (initially designed for pregnancy but also excellent for postpartum recovery), combined with gentle soft tissue work, we gradually worked toward restoring balance to her pelvis and lower back.

A few weeks into her post-partum Chiropractic care, Valerie shared that her lower back pain went away and that she felt like herself again!  It’s moments like these that remind me why I love what I do.

Techniques I Use in My Etobicoke Practice

Every person’s body responds differently to Chiropractic adjustments, which is why I’ve spent years learning various techniques to customize each patient’s care to their condition and level of comfort.

These are some of the gentle techniques that I utilize in my practice:

Activator Method

This is one of my go-to approaches for patients who are nervous about manual adjustments or have conditions that require extra gentleness and care. The Activator delivers a quick, low-force impulse to specific spots along your spine. It feels like a tiny tap, but the results are powerful. Many patients are amazed that something so gentle can provide such relief.

Perfect for:

  • First-time Chiropractic patients
  • Patients with Osteoporosis or Arthritis
  • Anyone who prefers minimal force
  • Acute pain situations where manual adjustments might be too intense

Integrator Method

Torque Release Technique is another one of my go-to approaches for patients who are nervous about manual adjustments or have conditions that require extra gentleness and care.  It is a specialized Chiropractic technique that restores balance to the tone of your nervous system in a gentle and non-invasive manner. It utilizes the Integrator, which is a recoil, low-force instrument used to deliver Chiropractic adjustments to correct primary areas of subluxations/misalignments.

At roughly 1/10,000th of a second, this specific instrument delivers the precise amount of energy to help normalize nerve function, allowing your nervous system to heal and recover from your daily life stressors more optimally.

It is entirely safe and effective to use for all ages and stages of life, including babies, children, pregnant women, and the elderly.

Diane, an active retiree, was skeptical when I utilized only this technique to address her neck pain. But when her neck pain disappeared within a month of care, she was amazed at how powerful this gentle technique was.

Webster Technique: Prenatal Care for Pregnancy

While initially developed for use during pregnancy, this technique is also excellent for anyone with sacral (tailbone area) or pelvic imbalances. It’s incredibly gentle and focuses on creating balance in the pelvis, crucial for back pain relief.

I’ve used this technique on:

  • Pregnant women at all stages
  • Postpartum recovery
  • Men and women with sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • Anyone with lower back pain caused by pelvic imbalance

Postural Education: Small Changes That Make a Big Difference

In addition to Chiropractic adjustments, I believe education is a key part of your healing.  I always make sure to educate patients on various topics related to:

  • How to sit correctly at their desk (hint: your monitor should be at eye level)
  • Safe lifting techniques (bend those knees)
  • Optimal sleeping positions that support spinal health
  • Simple exercises to maintain alignment between visits

These small changes compound over time, creating lasting relief that extends far beyond your appointments.

When to See a Chiropractor for Back Pain

People often wonder when the right time is to do something about their pain.  If you are already at a point where your pain is affecting your life, it’s time to do something about it.

Here are clear signs you need to see a Chiropractor:

Persistent or Worsening Pain

If your back has been hurting for more than a few days, or if it’s getting worse instead of better, your body is telling you something needs attention.  Pain rarely goes away on its own and if anything, tends to worsen over time.

Limited Mobility

Are you having trouble checking your blind spot while driving?  Are you struggling to put on your socks? Unable to pick up your kids? These mobility limitations are your body’s way of protecting areas of your spine that are misaligned so seeing a Chiropractor immediately will help.

Difficulty Sleeping Due to Discomfort

Interrupted sleep because of pain or discomfort is extremely frustrating.  I’ve heard countless stories from patients saying that for years, they struggle to find a comfortable sleeping position or wake up daily in pain or with headaches.  If that is you, it’s time to get help.

Pain After Injury, Strain, or Prolonged Sitting

Whether it’s an injury or the slow build-up from daily work or postural habits, don’t ignore your body’s warning signals.  Getting issues addressed earlier means faster recovery and prevents compensation patterns from developing.

When Pain Medications Aren’t Enough

Painkillers may provide temporary relief but they won’t get to the root issue of what is causing your pain.  As a Chiropractor specializing in back pain, I get to the root cause, not just the symptoms.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Walking into a new healthcare provider’s office can feel intimidating, especially when you’re in pain.  That’s why I want to walk you through exactly what happens when you visit my Etobicoke Chiropractic clinic.

The Health History

Your first visit starts with me doing your health history and understanding the different stressors that may have contributed to your back pain.  I want to hear not just about your pain, but about your life. What activities has the back pain taken from you? What are your concerns about treatment? What does a pain-free life look like to you?

Tina, a long-time patient of ours, cried during her health history, not from pain, but because it was the first time a healthcare provider had listened to her and asked about her goals, not just her symptoms.

The Assessment

Next, we do a thorough but gentle examination. This includes:

  • Posture analysis
  • Palpation (gentle touching) of your spine to identify areas of subluxation/misalignment
  • Neurological Testing & X-rays (if necessary)

Everything is explained as we go, and you can ask questions or voice concerns at any time. Your comfort, physical and emotional, is always my utmost priority.

Your Personalized Plan

At your next visit, we will sit down and review the results of your examination findings and any tests. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. We always make sure to customize a plan that takes into account your specific condition, lifestyle, comfort level, and goals.

Your First Adjustment

Your first adjustment is generally done after reviewing your personalized plan.  As I mentioned earlier, based on your examination findings, testing, and comfort level, we will select the appropriate technique to adjust your spine.  Patients often find they begin to experience much-needed relief right after their first adjustment!
