Painkillers: The new epidemic

Canadians spent $28.8 billion on prescription drugs in 2014.

In Canada, 3.8 infants out of 1,000 births were born to mothers who used painkillers during pregnancy and displayed a recognizable set of withdrawal symptoms (i.e. seizures, tremors, excessive high-pitched crying, etc.) to those drugs that together are called neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS).

According to the Canadian Health Measures survey, the leading prescription medications used by children and young adults (ages 6 to 24) were for attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (males), depression, and contraception (females).
